A composition is made up of sentences which are based on words and phrases. That is to say, words play an important role in contributing to a good article. It is essential to use proper and selected words to convey the meanings and emotions of the author. Words are not merely common materials but also the bearing wall in the "building" of a composition.The rhetorical devices have increasingly drawn greater attention. It is believed that figures of speech have the magical power of lighting up the language. There are words such as verbs, adjectives, nouns and even the function words such as conjunctions, interjections and onomatopoeic words, etc. In some cases, words themselves are related to figures of speech. This essay focuses on adjectives to make a thorough analysis of this rhetorical device and its relationship with expressions in compositions.This essay consists of five parts. The first part is the abstract explaining the reasons for choosing this topic. Generally speaking, middle school students are trained in outlines and thesis statements of composition, but they are relatively poor in effectively expressing their ideas which impairs the excellence of the articles. It is not uncommon that people have been holding prejudice against adjectives. They take it for granted that too many adjectives will do harm to the meaning of the composition. This essay tells how to choose adjectives, make thorough analysis of its rhetorical function so as to reverse prejudice, to make use of proper adjectives to improve and reinforce the effects of writing.The second part mainly introduces some repeated forms, namely, AA, ABB, AABB and ABCC and their respective meanings. The meanings of adjectives are comprised of rational meaning and perceptual meaning. The latter consists of various extra meanings, including emotional flavors, image flavors, and flavors of types of writings, gender flavors, time's flavors and local ones. These extra meanings have the rhetorical functions. That is why adjectives are rhetorical.The third part explains the rhetorical functions of adjectives by analyzing examples, which include rhythmic ones, descriptive ones and expression ones. In terms of definition of adjectives, the writer mainly discusses the important role of image flavors, emotional flavors, and flavors of types of writings in writing.The fourth part mostly expounds the usages of adjectives. This part further discusses some important points and their reasons in teaching writing as well as the methods of training. First, it is important to pay attention to synonyms and analyze the rhetorical functions brought about by using adjectives skillfully. Second, students should have a good command of antonyms. This part analyses the rhetorical functions of proper use of antonyms. Furthermore, this part proposes to use adjectives creatively or use neology if possible. Last, the author talks briefly about the ways of training on how to write episodes of a composition.The second to fourth parts refer to word building of adjectives, such as by repeatness, parataxis, comparison and empathy. These parts also explain the relationship between using adjectives properly and ten kinds of figures of speech.The last part is conclusion to sum up the essay. It is pointed out that putting the emphasis on using and training of adjectives can not only improve the expression of compositions, but also help to develop and enhance language sense and thinking.
