Different countries have different cultures, systems of values and ways of thinking. Therefore,pragmatic failure, referring to the mistake that causes the breakdown of human speech communication, is inevitable. As an important subject of pragmactics, it is of great guiding significance to English teaching in China.The dissertation goes thoroughly into pragmatic failure in theory.Through the analysis of examples and profound causes of pragmatic failures made by students in senior middle schools, the dissertation suggests that we should not only realize sufficiently the side-influence,but also face objectively this common phenomenon in second language learning, and that we can utilize the good opportunity of English teaching brought by pragmactic failure, then provide feasible methods to improve the efficiency of English learning and teaching substantively.This dissertation consists of five parts. It starts, in the first part, with a brief introduction to the catergories of the pragmactic failure--- pragmalinguistic failure and sociolingustic failure. The second part, by investigating the senior middle school students' English pragmatic competence, the author finds that pragmatic failures exist among nearly all the senior middle school students.This part is also devoted to the manifestation of pragmactic failure made by senior middle school students in the process of learning English. These forms are classified and analysized in accordance with the catergories of pragmatic failure introduced in the first part. Then in the third part, an in-depth cause analysis is made in terms of teachers' teaching approaches, curriculum writing, the means of tests etc.The next part,vital for this dissertation, suggests several countermeasures for pragmatic failure based on the analysis in the previous part,namely incorporating pragmatic knowledge into our teaching ,reinforce culture teaching, and make full use of various teaching resources etc. Finally, the fifth and last part concludes that the solution to pragmatic failure made by senior middle school students,whose significance is decided by the sophistication of cross-cultural communication ,is to develop their pragmatic competence.Teachers of English in senior middle school should treat pargmatic failure appropriately,which provides great enlightenment and sheds light on its value for English Teaching in senior middle school.
