Different countries have different cultures, systems of values and ways of thinking. Therefore, pragmatic failure, referring to the mistake that causes the breakdown of human speech communication, is inevitable. As an important subject in pragmatics, it is of great guiding significance to English teaching in China. The dissertation goes thoroughly into pragmatic failure in theory. Through the analysis of examples and profound causes of pragmatic failure made by students in senior middle schools, the dissertation suggests that we should not only realize sufficiently its side-influence, but also face objectively this common phenomenon in second language learning, and that we can utilize the good opportunity of English teaching brought by pragmatic failure to deal with the solution of pragmatic failure, then provide feasible methods to improve the efficiency of English learning and teaching substantively.This dissertation consists of six parts. It starts, in its first part, with a brief introduction to the categories of pragmatic failure—pragmalinguistic failure and sociopragmatic failure. The second part is devoted to the manifestation of pragmatic failure made by senior middle school students in the process of learning English.
