Reading is a psychological process of acquiring information from the written language, English reading is an important part of English teaching. Meanwhile, it is also a difficult part for students to improve. To improve reading ability, the students should grasp basic reading strategy, that is, in the reading process students have the ability to utilize different sorts of skills to read different linguistic materials correctly and fluently. But the fact is that many senior students'reading abilities are far below where they should be, and discrepancy turns to be greater. This has drawn attention of many linguists and researchers working in this field. Based a questionnaire investigation and theory study, this paper has made a brief study on senior students'English reading, It Focuses largely on reading strategies, illustration the necessary of reading strategies so that the concrete approaches can be determined.This paper has six chapters.Chapter1, a brief introduction is given. How important the reading teaching is and the problems in students'English reading.Chapter2 discusses the essential of reading and learning strategies, the definitions of reading and strategies existing in the minds of different people and analyzes their advantages and disadvantages, thus the author select one definition which appropriate to this paper. Then the author discussed the traditional teaching procedure of English reading courses and the problems existing in it.Chapter3, the theoretic basis of this paper. It introduces three interactive methods of the reading process, namely, the psycholinguistic model, the sociolinguistic model, and the schema theory model, and then the author will expose three models of reading process.Chapter4 Eighty students in two classes from key school were chosen as the subjects for questionnaire investigation, based on reading strategies. The results show that a low percentage of senior students use reading strategies in reading activities, the results also show that reading strategy learning is almost neglected altogether. Then this paper illustrates reading strategies employment results in efficient reading comprehension. From cognitive perspective, reading strategies may begin as declarative knowledge, and then turn into procedural knowledge with repeated practice..Chapter5 with considering the questionnaire investigation results and the theoretical study, a strategy-based instruction and training plan has been made. It was put to practice and the test statistic results show the plan is practical and valuable. These results also support the ides that reading strategies aid in improving reading ability and reducing discrepancy.Chaper6 is the conclusion. It is found out that majority of senior students fail to use reading strategies in reading activities. Views are held that lack of reading strategies is one of the main factors that affect the improvement of reading ability. The results of experiment made by the author support the idea.
