The paper elaborates Li Gen-yuan's thoughts and activities around1911 revolution and discloses the course of bourgeois revolutionistthoughts which he represented.Influenced by Chinese traditional nationalism and stimulated by thesocial reality of domestic trouble and foreign invasion, he had grown upto be a soldier in bourgeois democratic revolution from Xiucai in the lateQing dynasty. He renounced the pen for the sword and went to Japan tostudy military knowledge. Having been cultivated by western bourgeoispolitical theory and made the acquaintance of some leaders of bourgeoisrevolution such as Sun Yat-sen and Huang Hsing, he joined the UnitedLeague and then began to revolt. Not only did Li pay more attention topropaganda, but he took part in revolutionary activities. Thus he is anunwavering revolutionist. In 1909, Li came back to Yunnan, hostedYunnan Military Academy where he cultivated revolutionary forces andtook part in organizing and led "the uprising on the Double NinthFestival" in Yunnan. Therefore, he made indelible contributions to thevictory in Yunnan.After the foundation of the Republic of China, Li intended tocommit himself to the building of democratic politics. However, Yuan Shi-kai killed democracy and practiced arbitrary rule. As a result, Lideveloped to struggle against Yuan. After the failure of the SecondRevolution, he went into exile to Japan and organized European-affairResearch Group, which is an anti-Yuan organization and had some zigzagon the anti-Yuan strategy. Yuan having disclosed his plot for autocraticmonarchy, Li based on European-affair Research Group and made greatcontributions for the victory of the National Protection Movement.
