Edgar Allan Poe (1809 -- 1849) is one of the most important American writers, and the research on his artistic creation is one of the topics of general interest in the literary criticism today. In the Poe study many achievements have been gained in different aspects. However, the more marvelous the work is, the more perspectives it can offer for people to research. This thesis will discuss some of Poe's short stories to reveal the characteristic of poetry in his artistic creation. This thesis approaches Poe's three kinds of short stories and explores the poetic feature. Besides, Poe's cosmology is probed elaborately. "Eureka" is Poe's speculation on the nature of the universe. It's Poe's poetic understanding of the universe, and filled with the sparks of his intuition and imagination. Poe makes every effort to describe the ideal state in man's innermost being and understand the outside world of space and the inside world of self, trying to look for the harmony between the nature and human being. The thesis carries on the exploration into Poe's thoughts, bringing the exterior factors of Poe's works - the society, history and culture - to the foreground. Combining with Poe's personal tragedy, his world is discussed deeply, and the forming reasons of his art style are expounded. Poe's artistic creation is full of his prophetic solicitude for the predicament of human being and exerts great influence upon the world literature and the culture of later ages.Poe's short stories are permeated with the poetic feature. Based on the poetic passion, he presents his cosmology and philosophy. Poe's contribution lies in the poetic art world under his pen. In this poetic world, the mechanical material world is full of charm and magic again, and the exhausted souls return to the mental haven.
