Material, the basic instrument in Chinese painting, plays a significant role in it. When we look back at the history of Chinese painting, we will find that the painting material undergoes a process of change from silk, flax paper to ban 'sheng paper and then to rice paper. However, every change in the painting material can lead to the change in the painting style. It is known that tradition develops in the process of material change. In this paper I will try to illustrate the change in painting style in the three dynasties—Yuan, Ming and Ch'ing—from the perspective of material change ,and its influence. The developing of painting material is also an important element in the innovation and exploration of contemporary Chinese paintings.This paper consists of three parts. In the first part, I talk about the influence of material on painting style, and by citing other forms of art expression such as painted pottery, bronze, mural painting, etc, apart from painting, as examples, I want to make clear that different material has different texture, and therefore has different artistic style. Chinese painting as a traditional form of art expression has its own material change in its history. And every change in material can bring about great transformation in painting style. I will prove the effect of material change on painting style by analyzing the paintings of the Yuan, Ming, and Ch'ing dynasties.In the second part, I study the production and development of painting paper from Yuan to Ch'ing dynasties, and put forward my own understanding of the influence of material change on the painting style, with the emphasis shifting fromexpressing emotions, stressing modeling in Yuan dynasty to attaching importance to the form of paintings— "brushstrokes "in Ming and Ch'ing dynasties, and the relationship between the Chinese painting paper and the literati painting.In the third part, I analyze the contradiction between the prospect of material exploration and its present approval level by taking the innovation and exploration of painting material in history and the application of some contemporary new material in Chinese painting into consideration <>...
