In the thesis, the specific skills of this writing are given a detailed analysis together with a brief review of the function of silence as well as the reasons for Woolfs choice.Among the various conclusions from the research work about silence's function, Maltz's theory of gradable silence is chosen as the basis for the analysis here. Then the reasons for Woolf to choose the writing of silence are considered from three aspects: silence and modernity; silence, silent women and a woman's sentence; silence and poetic language. After these, the thesis dwells on the idiosyncratic punctuation, lexis, metaphors and the rhythm in Woolfs works to present a tentative analysis for her creative and stylistic use of silence in her writing. And it is expected that it can offer the reader a new angle and help him achieve a better understanding in appreciating Woolfs works and those of others.
