Taijiquan was created by Chen Wang Ting in the period of the late Ming dynasty. It combined the knowledge of various martial arts and was handed down from Chen Wang Ting ancestors, on the basis of the "Yi Jing," Yin-Yang philosophy, and the traditional Chinese medicine theory of meridians and collaterals. As an integration of the opening and closing of the yin and yang, empty and full, hardness and softness, slow and quick movements, it is suitable for people of all ages. After hundreds of years, it still retains its ancient features of hardness and softness, speed and slowness, jumping and shaking loose as well as issuing a spiral movements of Qi. Because of its great value in maintaining and protecting health as well as its superb martial qualities of attack and defense it is well known in martial arts circles. It is suitable both for physically strong people for strengthening their constitution, as well as for the physically weak and for the treatment of patients with certain chronic diseases, and therefore it is loved by the people.When the human body enters the middle age, various tissues and functions of body organs gradually decline, resulting in appearance of all kinds of diseases that seriously influence the person's health. Adopting a suitable physical activity to improve physical health is an important subject in the field of the sports research. Chen Taijiquan is a mild exercise; it balances movement and stillness, uses relaxed breathing, strengthens cardiac function and regulates micro-circulation. The intensity of the exercise is rather small, movements are gentle and connected, during the practice the mind should stay calm, body relaxed, using the intention and not force, so that consciousness, breathing and the movements become mutually combined, that will adjust the yin and yang of the body, open meridians, activate Qi and blood, so as to achieve the function of health care and conform to the physiological characteristics of the elderly people.This research presents a comprehensive physiological and pathological analysis from the perspective of cardiovascular system, respiratory system, nervous system, motor system and psychological influences, discussing the Chen style Taijiquan function on promoting general health, and its mechanism of recovery from the disease.Practice has proved that Chen style Taijiquan is a gentle, mild and slow exercise, mainly with soft, subtle movements combined with breathing that helps the promotion of the practitioner's health. It has a good effect on the nervous system, motor system, cardiovascular system and respiratory system and has a function of health protection. Long-term practice can dispel illnesses, train body and mind, achieve the longevity. We should strengthen the study of its health functions, using this ancient Chinese wisdom for human progress.
