0bjective:To assess the roles and the effects of inhibin A and activin A in the fetal growth. Methods:Maternal antepartum blood, umbilical vein blood and placenta and were collected from the forty-three pregnant woman in obstetrical department of our hospital, which including FGR and normal pregnancy respectively 23 cases. The placental samples were detected by HE stain, and the expression of inhibin/activin subunit–α,-βA were analysed by immunohistochemistry. Serum concentration of maternal antepartum blood and umbilical vein blood were measured using ELISA.Result:(1) In HE stain slides of the placental samples, villi developing well, blood vessels expanding distinctly, there were less interstitial cells and more syncytiotrophoblas(tSTB) nodes and cell bridges in normal pregnancy group than FGR groups. inhibin/activin subunit–α,-βA expressed in STBs mainly. A significant higher expression of the inhibin/activin–α,-βA subunit in FGR syncytiotrophoblast compared to normal pregnancies was observed. (2) The ELISA results of maternal blood and umbilical blood in the FGR group showed higher than the normal pregnancy group distinctly. The level of serum inhibin A and activin A were negatively correlated with their birth weight and subcutaneous fat thickness. (3) All fetus had detectable inhibin A and actvin A levels that were lower compared to the mothers; and there were no relationship between fetal and maternal levels. (4)Inhibin/activin–α,-βA subunit were positively correlated with fetal and maternal levels. (5)Area under ROC curve of inhibin A was 0.862, and area under ROC curve of activin A was 0.782.Conclusion: Inhibin A and activin A play an important roles in adjust fetus growth and placenta development. The matermal serum Inhibin A and activin A can be regarded as one of the clinical indexes to evaluate fetus growth and placental function.
