Background .There are great physical activity, much sebaceous secretion during juvenile age. So, the acne, folliculitis, athelet foot diseases give much trouble to the youth. The youth see important to their face, these may give much confidience to their social activity. Therefore, it is important to solve their skin disease to improve life quality. Cutaneous diseases in adolescents are common in Taiwan; however, there is little related clinical analysis reported before.PurposesThe purpose of this study was to investigate the clinical data of the common adolescent's cutaneous diseases during the dermatology outpatient department at the Tungs'Taichung MetroHarbor Hospital.Methods .We use the ICD-9 code to search common cutaneous disease from Tungs'Metroharbor hospital information room during our dermatological outpatient department since January to December, 2009. We collect the visit numbers and the patient numbers in each cutaneous diseases during different age. And, we analysis the data during the juvenile age.Results1. Dermatology outpatient medical treatment of adolescent patients, accounting for 15.2% of the total patients number, and 15.1% of the total visits number.2. The peak of the adolescent visit numbers in dermatology outpatient department was , in July, August, followed in February, which was the summer and winter vacation period for students.3. Acne is the most common skin disease during adolescent period, either from the patent numbers and visits numbers, followed by infectious dermatology diseases, and eczema.4. Adolescent acne accounted for 34.6% of the adolescent patient numbers, suggesting that acne is one of the most important issues to young people. No difference in sex ratio, adolescent acne represent the largest patient numbers during 15-18 years of age, it may be more related to more male hormones change at this stage.5. The adolescent infectious dermatology diseases accounted for 17.2% of the total visits number, the most common diseases in order were bacterial infections, viral infections, fungal infections. In various infectious diseases, men had higher rates of visits number than women. The most common bacterial infection disease was folliculitis, followed by boil or carbuncle, cellulitis, purulent rash scab. The most common viral infection diseases was common wart. The most common fungal infection disease was tinea pedis, followed by tinea versicolor, onychomycosis, tinea shares.6. The adolescent eczema diseases accounted for 8.4% of the total visits number, mainly contact dermatitis. This may be related to the young people like to wear rings, wear earrings, wear perfume, nail polish rub, leading to allergic contact dermatitis. Atopic dermatitis rare occurs in adolescence, which represent that atopic dermatitis is not mainly problem in young patients. Seborrheic dermatitis can not be found during the young patients, this may be related to lower incidence rates in coastal region of central Taiwan's young people.7. The adolescent alopecia areata accounts for 0.5% of the total visits number, all adolescent alopecia areata were women and there is an upward trend of visits number when increased age.8. The adolescent psoriasis accounted for 0.05% of the total visits number and only one female patient.9. The adolescent vitiligo accounted for 0.64% of the total visits number, and there is more patient number found during the early stage of the adolescent. ConclusionIn conclusion, acne is the most common skin disease, followed by infections dermatological disease and eczema in adolescent. The most peak visits number in adolescent happened in summer and winter vacation. The adolescent acne has most visits number during 15-18 year old age, and the male to female ratio was insignificant. The most common infectious dermatological diseases in order were bacterial infections, viral infections, fungal infections, and male had higher visits number then female. Eczema disease in adolescent were mainly contact dermatitis. Furthermore, these data may provide useful information to Taiwan's adolescent skin health policy in the future.
