Objective: To evaluate the B cell-activating factor of the TNF family (BAFF) expression between normal turbinate and nasal polyp tissue and explore the pathogenesis of the nasal polyp. Methods: We collected nasal polyp tissue from 10 patients with CRSwNP and 10 control subjects (the hypertrophic inferior turbinate from the deviated nasal septum patient), and use immunohistochemistry and quantitative real-time PCR, the protein expression of BAFF and NF-КB subunit P52 as well as Bcl-2 between the nasal polyps and the inferior turbinates was compared. The concentration of immunoglobulin IgA in the tissue homogenates was detected by immunoturbidimetric assay Results: (1) BAFF significantly increased in nasal polyps group compared with inferior turbinate group (P<0.05). (2) The expression level of NF-КBP52 in nasal polyps group were significantly higher than that in inferior turbinate group (p<0.05). (3) There was a significant increase in Bcl-2 expression in nasal polyps group in compare with inferior turbinate group (p<0.05) (4) IgA, an immunoglobulin isotype known to activate eosinophils, was also significantly elevated in the polypoid tissue(p<0.001). Conclusion: These data suggest that the upregulation of BAFF may be associated with the occurrence of nasal polyp , and it may play an important role in the pathogenesis of nasal polyps through the activation of both NF-КB pathway.
