| Tsoongiodendron odorum Chun. was selected for phytochemistry and pharmacological investigations. T. odorum belongs to Tsoongiodendron genus, Magnoliaceae.Chemical investigation of the twigs of T. odorum led to the isolation of 37 chemical constituents by various chromatographic methods (silica gel column chromatography, Sephadex LH-20 column chromatography, preparative-HPLC, et al.). Their structures were determined by spectroscopic data analysis (ESI-MS, 1H-NMR, 13C-NMR, DEPT, et al.), including lignans, aromatics, phenylpropanoids, alkaloids, sterols, fatty acids, and a sesquiterpenoid. Among them, 32 compounds were isolated from this plant for the first time, including one new natural product (GGM-24). Furthermore, polylignans (GGM-13-GGM-15) and norlignans(GGM-16?GGM-24) were reported for the first time from the Magnoliaceae family, which may support the opinion to establish Tsoongiodendron as a monotypic genus from a chemotaxonomical point of view. Such findings may be of chemotaxonomic value for the Magnoliaceae family. The cytotoxicity of 14 compounds, including lignans GGM-6~GGM-11, polylignans GGM-13~GGM-14, norlignans GGM-18~GGM-19, phenylpropanoids GGM-32~GGM-33 and phenolic amides GGM-34~GGM-35, against four tumor cell lines (A549, Colo 205, QGY-7703, and LOVO) were evaluated by MTT assay, and no significant anti-proliferative activities were exhibited. |
