Objectives:The purposes of this study were to develop diabetes health education pathway on the surgical diabetic patients, to standardize the methods of diabetes health education on the surgical diabetic patients, to improve the quality of the patients'health education and satisfication. Methods:First established diabetes health education pathway for the surgical diabetic patients. Then selected the hospitalized surgical diabetic patients in The Second Affiliated Hospital, Zhejiang University College of Medicine for study.53 patients in the control group, used traditional health education methods (no time limit, optional health education), and organized diabetes lectures for a collective of patients regularly and so on.58 patients in the experimental group, used diabetes health education pathway. When the patients admitted to hospital, put 1 form of diabetes health education pathway in the end of the sickbed. The nurses carried it out according to diabetes education, and guided patients to master knowledge and skills related to the disease. Each completion of a project, tick "V" in the front of the corresponding, and indicated the time and signature. The charge nurse and the senior clinical nurses inspected the path implementation, and gived guidance if necessary. Results:Experimental group:average fasting blood-glucose and postprandial 2h (FBG,2hPBG), hypoglycemia incidence, the number of days waiting for surgery, satisfaction with health education of diabetes, awareness on diabetes related knowledge and compliance are all better than the control group, p<0.05 or<0.01, the value were statistically significant. However, about with/without delay surgery date because of glycemia control, with/without incision infection and wound healing, total length of stay and hospital costs, no statistically significant difference were observed between the two comparision groups. Conclusions:These results suggest that implementation of diabetes health education pathway on the surgical diabetic patients may be a effective tool for enhancing the health education outcome and satisfication by controlling glycemia, decreasing hypoglycemia incidence; shortening the number of days waiting for surgery and by improving the satisfaction with the diabetes health education, awareness on diabetes related knowledge and compliance. It is worth promoting and reference.
