Objective1. In this thesis, an attempt is made to investigate the current social support conditions of elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone and explore the general features and common rule of their influence on social support.2. To observe the influencing factors of the social support of elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone, and to explore the relationship between social support, depression and the treatment compliance.MethodsA random sampling method was used. In this research 60 hospitalized elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone and 60 hospitalized elderly Diabetes Mellitus living with their families who have similar demographic data were selected, according to the proportion of 1:1,from patients who had hospitalized in Hospital from September 2008 to August 2009. All the patients, whose illnesses were definitely diagnosed as Diabetes Mellitus, were investigated by Individual Information Sheet, Self-Rating Depression Scale, Social Support Rating Scale, Treatment Compliance Questionnaire. The Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) 17.0 was used for the descriptive analysis of ANOVA, t-test, Pearson correlation analysis and Logistic stepwise regression.Results1.The result of 2 samples t-test on social support indicates statistical significance in totally different social average supporting scores, subjective support, objective support and usage of support between the two groups (P<0.05). 2. The results of 2 samples t-test on treatment compliance showed a different average score in exercise, medical treatment; the score of periodic check-up,self-monitoring were found to be of statistical significance between the two groups, but there were no statistical significance on diet control between the two groups. Among the five indexes of treatment compliance for the elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone, score of index compliance of diet control was the highest, and the following order was exercised, medical treatment, periodic check-up, and the score of self-monitoring was the lowest.3. There was a significantly statistical difference of depression between the two groups. Social support of the elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone with depression was higher than those living with their families, P<0.01. Depression had a negative correlation with social support and coefficients were between -0.851 and -0.422, P< 0.01, and Depression had a negative correlation with treatment compliance, and coefficients were between -0.660 and -0.305, P< 0.05. Among the five indexes of treatment compliance for the elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone, coefficients of exercise was the highest, and the following order was diet control, medical treatment, periodic check-up, and the self-monitoring was the lowest.4. There were positive correlation between social support and treatment compliance. And their logistic coefficients between subjective support, objective support, usage of support, social support and the five indexes of treatment compliance, including the total score of treatment compliance were between 0.506 and 0.334, 0.108 and 0.541,0.045 and 0.494,0.270 and0.615.5. The results of logistic regression analysis indicated that disease courses, age, economic level, and gender were the main factors that were related to social support of the elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone. Their logistic coefficients were-0.620,-0.235,0.730,-1.988 respectively. Among them, the strongest influential factor was gender.Conclusion1. In general the social support of the elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone is lower than that of the control group, including all aspects:subjective support, objective support, and usage of support.2.The total treatment compliance score of elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone is lower than that of the control group, especially in exercise, medical treatment periodic check-up, and the score of self-monitoring, but not significant in diet control.3. Social support, depression and treatment compliance interact with each other.4. The main influential factors of the elderly Diabetes Mellitus living alone are as follows:gender, economic level, disease courses and age. Among them, the strongest influential factor is gender.
