| Idiopathic facial paralysis or Bell's palsy is a common condition which can manifest at any age, but more commonly between the ages of 20 to 40, with males being more prone to the disease. Though not proven to be seasonal, but the number of incidences is higher during spring and autumn. Although not a fatal disease, but the incidence is high and if not treated promptly or correctly, the disease can become complicated and ultimately affect the appearance and quality of life. Some viruses are thought to establish an infection, but the etiology and pathogenesis are not fully understood. Certain treatment in Western medicine is found to have major side effects. Treatment with TCM, however, has its long history. Much experience in treating the disease has been accumulated, yet, it lacks a consensus in a definite treatment protocol.ObjectiveThe study observes the therapeutic effect of using Wang Le Ting's Qianzheng formula in the treatment of Bell's palsy.MethodA total of 60 patients were diagnosed with Bell's palsy, and were randomly divided into 2 groups. The treatment group was prescribed Wang's Qianzheng formula, while the control group received basic acupuncture. They were treated once a day,10 days equal one course of treatment; therapy ends by the 6th week of treatment.ResultsWang's Qianzheng formula treatment group consisted of 30 patients. After treatment, the curative rate was 46.67%, very effective rate was 33.33%, and effective rate was 33.33%. The acupuncture control group consisted of 30 patients as well. After treatment, the curative rate was 33.33%, very effective rate was 30.00%, and effective rate was 20.00%. The difference in total effective rate of the two groups was statistically significant; it showed that the treatment group was more effective than the control group. The symptoms improved in both groups, but the rate of improvement was more significant for the treatment than the control group (p<0.05). The observed symptoms include:difficulty frowning, blinking, sniffing, smiling, and loss of taste in 2/3 of the tongue, and pain in ear on the affected side. The improvement seen in these symptoms was more significant in the treatment than the control group.ConclusionWang's Qianzheng formula for treatment of trigeminal neuralgia was more effective than basic acupuncture; the total effective rate was much higher in the treatment group. It significantly improved the clinical symptoms by improving circulation, reducing edema to benefit recovery for the damaged nerves. During the entire experiment, no adverse reaction was seen and lab tests (blood test, urine test, stool test and tests for liver and kidney function) did not result in any abnormal reading. The treatment was both safe and effective. |
