Objective"Cai Ai Bian (A Book on Adoption of Moxibustion)" was noted by the famous physician Ye Guangzuo who lived in south of the Five Ridges in Qing dynasty, which is an early monograph of moxibustion therapy in south of the Five Ridges. "Cai Ai Bian Yi(Supplement to the Book on Adoption of Moxibustion)" was written by anonymous author, and was compiled and proofread by Ye Chashan. The existent editions of these two books are few nowadays, and the two books are not well known. Some books had quotations from the two books and had made mistakes with the author and the titles of the books. Less related research of the two books has been carried out, and only 4 thesis are about Cai Ai Bian Yi. Till now, there is no systematic research of these two books, which need further exploration and arrangement. In this study, we have done two aspects of work. On the basis of the collected existent editions, we firstly arranged, corrected and annotated the two books, thus to form an optimal chrestomathy that is faithful to the original edition, and to dig out the most precious material that can reflect the application of moxibustion techniques, Chinese herbal medicine and Chinese medical formulae. Secondly, we summarized the academic feature of the two books, discussed the application of acupoints for moxibustion in "Cai Ai Bian", sorted out the origin of formulae in "Cai Ai Bian Yi", and explored the issues of treating heat syndrome with moxibustion and so on, which will provide evidence for modern clinical research and the use of moxibustion.MethodsWe applied the General Principles for Ancient Chinese Medical Literature (short for "General Principles" below)to punctuate, proofread, annotate, and arrange the two books. Traditional methods such as classification and summarization are used to explore the academic issues of the two books.1 Literature Research of "Cai Ai Bian"and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"1.1 Biographical verification of Ye Guangzuo, and textual research of the doubtful points of "Cai Ai Bian"and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"The results of collecting data from the library, chorography and related books showed that there are a few records about Ye Guangzuo, and the information is spread around. In this study, we have complied a completely biographical introduction of Ye Guangzuo, which is originated from the collected scattered materials. Based on the above achievement, we do the textual research about the author and the title of "Cai Ai Bian" and "Cai Ai Bian Yi", and put forward our own view.1.2 The edition origins, and punctuation, collation and annotation of "Cai Ai Bian"and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"1.2.1 The edition origins of "Cai Ai Bian"and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"After analysis and comparison of the three editions of "Cai Ai Bian"and one edition of "Cai Ai Bian Yi", a definitive edition for collation was firstly confirmed. The results of comparison showed that the edition of Cai Ai Bian" kept in the library of Chinese Medical Association Shanghai Branch and published in Qing Dynasty is the earliest existent edition nowadays. This edition has fine carving and clear characters, and is served as the master copy. The Jiaqing edition kept in Taipei National Central Library was microfilmed. Although it was hand-copied late, the content is complete and can be used as the principal complement master copy. The edition kept in Shanghai University of TCM Library is re-copied from the edition of Chinese Medical Association Shanghai Branch, and is used as the consult copy. The edition of "Cai Ai Bian Yi" kept in the library of China Academy of Chinese Medical Sciences was published in the year of 16 in the reign of Jiaqing by Liuyi Tang. In 1985, based on the Liuyi Tang edition, the separate edition of "Cai Ai Bian Yi" was published by Publishing House of Ancient Chinese Medical Books, and is used as the master copy. For the content of moxibustion therapy in "Cai Ai Bian Yi" is based on "Cai Ai Bian", we use the three editions of "Cai Ai Bian" as the consult copy of "Cai Ai Bian Yi". Other books that have citations from the two books are used for reference.1.2.2 Punctuation, collation and annotation of "Cai Ai Bian"and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"After confirmation of the definitive edition for collation, we carried out the work of punctuation, collation and annotation of "Cai Ai Bian"and "Cai Ai Bian Yi" by following the instruction of "General Principles". (1) CollationFollowing the "General Principles" and according to the characteristics of the two books, we establish the guide to the use of a book, and make the collation words and sentences standardization. For the proofreading of original edition, methods of proofreading by comparing with other edition, with the own edition, and with other books, and proofreading by inference were used. Then we find out the differences, judge between right and wrong and chose the best one, thus to form a unified edition. During the proofreading, we extrude the questions and put forward hypotheses, then collect evidence, discuss by different aspects, and use inference carefully.(2) PunctuationOn the basis of understanding the content of "Cai Ai Bian", we make punctuation again and correct the mistakes of the original edition. There is less punctuation in "Cai Ai Bian Yi", and we make punctuation after well understanding the content of it.(3) AnnotationExplanation is also done by following the "General Principles". The job what we do include adding Pinyin to the unfamiliar words, explain the meaning of words, note the interchangeable characters, make detailed source criticism, remove ambiguity and so on. What we do should be reasonable and well-documented, and we try our best to unify literary meaning and medical thought, thus to let the readers with mid-level reading comprehension of Chinese ancient books accept it.The relevant research methods are listed above (being omitted)Achievements1 Initial completion of the proofreading of "Cai Ai Bian" and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"2 Related research of "Cai Ai Bian" and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"2.1 Academic characteristics of "Cai Ai Bian"and "Cai Ai Bian Yi"(1) Academic characteristics of "Cai Ai Bian" can be concluded as follows: adhering to "Inner Cannon" and advocating moxibustion; widely absorption of other academic medical thoughts and emphasizing on the use of acupoints of the channels; synthetical analysis of four examinations and emphasizing on inspection, auscultation-olfaction and interrogation; specializing in internal medicine and being good at the treatment of heat syndrome; emphasizing on nursing care during the treatment of pediatrics diseases; putting forward that the pathogenesis of women disease always being deficiency and involving emotional disorder; applying moxibustion as early as possible for the treatment of sore, ulcer and pyogenic infection.(2) Academic characteristics of "Cai Ai Bian Yi" can be concluded as follows: simplified content with emphasis of dietary therapy; simultaneous application of moxibustion and herbal medicine showing good therapeutic effect; with reference of the prescription thoughts of other physicians, creating now formula and medication methods; establishing special methods for processing drugs and developing multiple dosage forms.2.2 Characteristics of the use of acupoints for moxibustion in "Cai Ai Bian"In the book 358 acupoints have written down, but there have no records of Zhongshu, Dushu, Jimai; 5 extra-points were listed,42 points are prohibited for moxibustion, and 8 points should be avoided for moxibustion. At first he was a scholar, and then he became a doctor. During his lifetime. Ye Guangzuo was strict with study. When he was old, he still was ambitious and was busy writing books. In "Cai Ai Bian", moxibustion therapy was advocated for heat syndrome, which is one of its academic characteristics, and almost every diseases can be treated with moxibustion. He had read many medical classics such as "Inner Cannon of Medicine", "The Classic of Difficult Issues", "Treatise on Cold-Induced Disease", "Classic of Pluses", "Arcane Essentials from the Imperial Library", etc, and books written by famous physicians in Ming dynasty. He paid much attention to the thoughts of predecessors who treated disease according to the root of disease, searched the reason according to symptoms, treated diseases according to the pathogen. He was good at treating the febrile diseases, in particular the common disease and frequently encountered disease in south of the Five Ridges such as cold-induced disease, and diseases induced by heat, summer-heat and fire. He was also good at treating disease of internal medicine, especially the use of moxibustion for heat syndrome. For the pediatric diseases, he suggested to pay more attention to congenital constitution and nursing care; for sore, ulcer and pyogenic infection, moxibustion should be used as early as possible to disperse heat and toxins.(2) "Cai Ai Bian Yi" was written by anonymous author.
