ObjectivesSpinal cord injury (SCI) is a common severe disabling disease. Due to the development of modern medicine, more and more SCI patients survive from the initial injury, but because of the paralysis and partial loss of organ function resulted from the disease, SCI patients may suffer from mental injury mainly including anxiety and depression and simultaneously their activities of daily living decline, even become totally disabled which will influence their quality of life and thus they become a burden on the family and society. Research about this field is seldom found. This experiment want to explore the effects of Orem Self-care Mode in SCI patients'psychology and Activities of Daily Living.MethodsThe study used an experimental design. The 40 patients who selected from December 2008 to January 2010,40 cases of SCI who is hospitalization of Second Affiliated Hospital Fujian University of Traditional Chinese Medical, Rehabilitation Center were randomly allocated to a control or intervention group. The patients in the control group received routine nursing care. The intervention group received self-care mode interventions. The intervention time was one month. Five questionnaires were used for data collection:a general information sheet of patients, the Self-Rating Depression Scale (SDS),Self-Rating Anxiety Scale (SAS),Symptom Check List-90 (SCL-90), Barthel Index(BI).The statistical software SPSS for windows version 15.0 was used for data analysis.Results1,Thirty-eight victims was depression and thirty-seven victims was anxiety in forty victims. SCI patients may suffer from mental injury mainly including anxiety and depression.2,There was significant increase in negative emotions after one month in experimental group (P< 0.01), and also the significant difference in control group (P< 0.01).There was significant difference between the two groups in depression and anxiety (P< 0.01).3,There was significant difference between the two groups in SCL-90 (P< 0.01).Self-care mode is effective in improving SCI patients'physical and psychological conditions.4,There was significant increase in activities of daily living after one month in experimental group (P< 0.01), and also the significant difference in control group (P< 0.01). The ADL of the patient after intervention was improved greatly (P<0.01).Conclusions1,The majority of SCI patients suffer from negative emotions like depression and anxiety.2,Self-care mode can effectively improve the SCI patients'negative emotions like depression, anxiety, and physical and psychological conditions.3,Self-care can improve SCI patients'activities of daily living.
