This study aims to verify the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of the Patient Health Questionnaire Depression Scale (PHQ-9) in the elderly population in our community and to spread its application in community health services, and also to lay a screening foundation for a further development of community-special-hospital management in the future. This study adopts the methodology of multiple-stage cluster random sampling. Qingbo Subdistrict in Shangcheng District was randomly sampled as the primary-level sampling unit, and 2 communities of Ding'an Road and Huiminyuan Community were randomly sampled as the second-level sampling units. Then a survey was conducted among people who were and over 60, registered in these two communities. The results shows:the number of PHQ-9 screening participators is 1275, with 117 positive (depressive symptoms) and 77 depression compliant after the diagnostic interview (SCID). With the PHQ-9 Combach Alpha coefficient at 0.767, Guttman split-half reliability at 0.732, the coefficient of correlation among items at 0.374-0.608, and the coefficient of correlation among entries at 0.164-0.552, both of which have correlativity (P< 0.01), this indicates a good internal consistency and high reliability. With the sensibility at 88.31% and the specificity at 82.50%, and the area under a curve illustrated by the ROC curve (Receiver Operating Characteristic curve)> 0.5, this indicates good validity.Through this study, it demonstrates that the PHQ-9 is an operational depression screening tool with good reliability and validity shown in the screening research carried out in the elderly population in our community in China. And it can be used as a screening tool to spread its application in community health services.
