ObjectiveTo evaluate the outcome and complications of endoprosthetic reconstruction after wide tumor excision on the patients with neoplasms at the proximal femur.MethodsWe retrospectively reviewed 14 patients who underwent endoprosthetic reconstruction for primary or metastatic disease of the Proximal Femur from September 2004 to December 2009. The histologic diagnoses of these patients included 8 metastatic tumors,1 lymphomas,1 osteosarcomas,1 chondrosarcomas,1 alignant fibrous histiocytomas,1 iomyosarcoma,1 teoblastoma, five giant cell tumors. The functional outcomes were evaluated by MSTS 93 score.ResultThe average duration of follow-up was 12onths (range from 3~29nths). The overall postoperative patient survival was 43% at 5 years.1 fections,2 islocations(all of them had total hip prosthesis),1 ocal recurrencesand one fracture around the prosthesis had been noted. Overall implant survival was 78.6% at 5 years. The MSTS93 functional scores for 14 patients was (20.8±3.8).ConclusionsBecause of low complication rate and good postoperative function, endoprosthetic replacement is a good option for reconstruction of the proximal femur after tumor resection.
