Objective:This study observed the vascular change of carotid arterial remodeling and detected the plasma level of hydrogen peroxide, the activity of catalase in patients with essential hypertension, which intended to initially analysis the role of oxidative stress in hypertensive vascular remodeling.Methods:64 patients with essential hypertension were divided into two groups by carotid arterial intima-media thickness or not, which was measured by carotid ultrasonography:36 patients with EH and carotid arterial intima-media thickness and 28 patients with EH without carotid arterial intima-media thickness.24 healthy volunteers were selected as control group.Blood pressure(BP),height, weight, fasting blood sugar (FBS),triglyceride, cholesterol, high density lipoprotein-cholesterol (HDL-C),low lipoprotein-cholesterol(LDL-C),liver function, renal function were measured in all subjects. The levels of hydrogen peroxide and catalase were measured by colorimetry.Results:1,As compared with control group, the plasma level of hydrogen peroxide increased and the activity of catalase decreased in patients with essential hypertension, and the patients with different blood pressure levels had different plasma level of hydrogen peroxide and catalase activity.2,In patients with essential hypertension, compared with group EH1, the patients in group EH2 had higher Ep andβ,which meant carotid thickness. Moreover this change was correlated positively with the plasma level of hydrogen peroxide and negatively with catalase activity. Conclusion:1,Carotid artery thickness in essential hypertension was correlated positively with plasma level of hydrogen peroxide.2,Carotid artery thickness in essential hypertension was correlated negatively with catalase activity.
