Ornithogalum caudatum Ait is a perennial herb of Ornithogalum in Liliaceae,it is also known as pearl grass.Ornithogalum caudatum Ait mainly distributes in the temperate regions of the Eastern Hemisphere, which originates from southern Africa and is cultivated in northern China. Ornithogalum caudatum Ait is of high medicinal value, and the whole plant or bulb is used in folk recipe mainly for anti-inflammatory and disinfection, treating with liver disease, liver cancer and cholecystitis and so on.With the effectiveness of heat-clearing and detoxifying, elimination and resolving masses, the medicine has been paid more attention by the medical practitioners. At present, the researches on Ornithogalum caudatum Ait mainly focus on the following aspects of anti-tumor,immune regulation of polysaccharide and the chemical constituents. The modern study of its analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects in folk recipes has not been reported in literature. In the present paper, the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects of the ethanol extracts of Ornithogalum caudatum Ait are investigated, and the effective part are selected with modern methods in pharmacology. The results provide the experimental evidence for the further development and application of Ornithogalum caudatum Ait.The analgesic effect of the ethanol extracts of Ornithogalum caudatum Ait was observed by the hot-plate test and writhing analgesia test in this experiment;the anti-inflammatory effect was observed by the methods of xylene-induced mouse ear edema and acetic acid-induced capillary permeability increase in mice. The results showed that the extracts of Ornithogalum caudatum Ait could extend the pain threshold and reduce the number of writhing in mice, indicating the role of analgesia;the ethanol extracts of Ornithogalum caudatum Ait could inhibit the inflammatory response induced by xylene and significantly reduce the ear swelling of mice; it can reduce the capillary permeability and have obvious anti-inflammatory effects. In the primary selection of the effective part of the ethanol extracts of Ornithogalum caudatum Ait with the analgesic and anti-inflammatory effects, n-butanol extract has been defined as the effective part. This experiment provides the scientific basis for the pharmacological study and a reasonable reference for the clinical application of Ornithogalum caudatum Ait. |
