Objectives The aims of the research were to explore Perioperative patients'needs and experiences of Nurse-Patient communication, and to discuss the status Quo of nurse- patient communication and related factors. Methods A qualitative perspective using a hermeneutic phenomenological approach was considered to be the most appropriate methodology for this study. Using purposeful sampling, twenty perioperative patients in a general teaching hospital in Wuhan were interviewed. Data analysis was a reflective process and the findings were presented through the description and interpretation of themes and sub-themes.Results Following data analysis three themes emerged. These were,"the information needs and emotional experiences of Perioperative patients","the experiences of Nurse-Patient communication of Perioperative patients","the evaluation and expectation of nurse-patient relationship of Perioperative patients".Conclusions During perioperative period, patients'information needs are different, so as their emotional needs. But these different needs are ignored by nurses; they do not take patient as a whole person who has physical needs and psychological needs as well as social needs. Nurse-Patient communication is not patient-centered, so patients'needs are not met. The holistic nursing care during perioperative period is formalistic, and nurses'multiple roles are not fulfilled. Some measures must be adopted to enhance the conception of holistic nursing; to guide nurses'role to correct position, to refresh the knowledge structure of nurses, to allocate human resources reasonably. these would really make nurses to be good communicators and coordinators, to provide high-quality services for patients.
