Objective :To investigate the method of sex estimation by femur and to establish the sex discriminant functions by the parameters of femur. Methods:The 360 femurs were chosen from 180 Chinese skeletons (150 males and 30 females, age ranges from 18 to 76), which come from 14 provinces of China. The 21 parameters were measured with measurement instruments. The datas were analyzed by statistical software SPSS13.0.Independent-samples t test was made between left and right of femur of the same gender, and between male and female of the right femur. Fisher and Bayes discriminant analysis were adopted. series discriminating functions for gender femur were set up.Results:(1)The femurs of male or female can not be differ from each other by sides, we can choose the right fibulas to continue our study.(2)All of the 21 parameters can be used for sex estimation.(3)21 single factor discriminant functions and 1 multiple factor discriminant function were obtained. The most correct parameter for male is the width of femoral condyle 94%. The most correct parameter for female is the perimeter of the femoral head and the vertical diameter of the femoral neck 93.3%. The gender correct rate of discriminant functions is 98.0% for male, and 93.3% for female.Conclution:It showed that the discriminant functions acquired were effective in the sex determination for Chinese, and the multiple factor discriminant function is more reliable and valuable.
