Modern bonding techniques have been widely used for the fixation of tooth-shade materials such as resin inlays, all ceramic crowns, porcelain veneers, as well as fiber post. Not only the clinical procedures but also the cosmetic restoration could be benefited from the development of adhesive dentistry. The long-term success of indirect restorations does depend on a permanent bond between resin cements and the hard tooth tissues. The stable bond between resin cement and tooth tissues is greatly meanful for the durability and esthetic problems associated with the dental adhesive restorations in long-time stress in vivo.Traditional resin cements based on the use of adhesive agents on surface of teeth are complex and rather technique-sensitive, on which foreign scholars have been deeply attracted to study, especially the bonding merchanism. The first product , RelyX Unicem self-adhesive resin cement from 3M ESPE, is the newest and most popular type of universal resin cement. It eliminates the separate etching and bonding steps. Currently, Study on the resin cement are concentrated on exploratory development of adhesive agents, ingredient and function improvement, and study of bonding mechanism about a self-adhesive cement. If the factors, such as acid etching treatment and environmental temperature, affect bonding efficiency and micromorphology of bonding interface, we are still short of systematic study. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of pretreatment of acid etching and thermo-cycling on the bonding strength and bonding interfaces between several resin cements and enamel/dentin. The results from this study could present to provide some references for clinic procedures of self-adhesive resin cement RelyX Unicem.According to the results, the following conclusions could be achieved.1. There was no significant difference in bonding strength to dentin among three resin cements (Panavia F, Variolinkâ…¡,Vitique). The use of self-adhesive cement RelyX Unicem can obtain the bond strength to dentin similar to traditional resin cements. SEM observation revealed that resin tags were not obvious on the interfaces between dentin and RelyX Unicem , while the formation of resin tags could be easily defected on the interfaces between dentin and other two resin cements.2. There was no significant difference in bond strength to enamel between Panavia F and Vitique. Their bond strengths to enamel were superior to the self-adhesive cement RelyX Unicem. SEM observation proved that the bonding interfaces of the three resin cements to enamel were not significantly different.3. Pretreatment with acid etching on dentin surface could significantly decrease bond strength between the self-adhesive resin cement and dentin. SEM also observed resin tags on the bonding interface. Pretreatment with acid etching on enamel surface could significantly increase bond strength between resin cements and enamel. SEM observation proved that resin tags were not clearly formed.4. The scales of microleakage of the restorations using four resin cements(RelyX Unicem, Panavia F, Variolinkâ…¡and Vitique) after thermo-cycling were not significantly different. The use of self-adhesive resin RelyX Unicem could achieve marginal adaptation as good as the other three traditional resin cements in this study.
