Objective: To report a clinicopathological series of cases of solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura(SFTP) from Shandong Provincial Hospital to investigate its clinicopathological features and surgical treatment hoping to further knowledge of this pathology, its therapy and prognosis .Methods: The medical records of 8 patients treated in the last 5 years were reviewed,as well as of pathological records, including immunohistochemical stains. Follow-up data were obtained. In addition, a literature review with regard to treatment and clinical outcome was performed.Results: Eight patients, three men and five women aging from 31 to 70 years, underwent tumor resection and were followed in a period from 5 to 52 months. All patients underwent standard thoracotomy for tumor excision. Tumors were pathologically benign in five patients and malignant in three and all of them were positive for CD34 and Vimentin in immunohistochemical analysis. Patients were all alive with no evidence of tumor recurrence at the time of this report.Conclusion: The solitary fibrous tumor of the pleura (SFTP) is a rare primary tumor of the pleura. Complete resection remains the mainstay of cure. Most patients have favorable clinical outcome after radical resection . All SFTP patients need longterm follow-up. |
