| Objective: To investigate and assess the clinic and imaging features, microsurgical techniques, and operative effect in cases of tuberculum sellae meningiomas. Methods: Data in a consecutive series of 37 patients with tuberculum sellae meningiomas treated microsurgically between 2003 and 2007 were retrospectively reviewed. All patients were confirmed through MRI or CT exam .All the tumors were operated on with 4 different operative approaches, With the comparison of total resection rate, operative results and complications among the cases. Results: Simpson II grade resection was achieved in 35 cases, Simpson III grade resection was achieved in 2 cases. Complete resection (Simpson greadeâ…¡) was achieved in 35 out of 37(94.5%), subtotal in 2 patients(5.5 %). no cases died of operation. Vision improved in 24 patients, remained unchanged in 12 patients, and deteriorated in 1 patients. The follow up period of patients ranged from 1-3 years. 14 patients resumed normal life activity and 1 case recurrenced tumor was observed and reoperated. Conclusions: Total resection may be achieved through an appropriate approach with minimal complications. Microsurgical technique, duration and severity of visual symptoms are well correlated with a dismal visual outcome. |
