Objective:Berberine has been shown to benefit glycemic control,lipid-lowering,insulin sensitivity and weight-losing.Adiponectin is an abundant protein produced by white adipose tissue,as a maker of metabolism syndrome.Recently,it is reported that berberine improve the expression of adiponectin in 3T3-L1 adipocytes. We examed the impact of berberine on serum adiponectin levels in primary patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus.Methods:61 primary type 2 diabetes mellitus patients were selected. Before the test, all subjects did diet control and excise for 4-6 weeks by the instruction of the doctors. Then, they were divided into two groups at random:Control group(n=30) who kept the previous life-style intervention for 12 weeks;Berberine group(n=31) who added berberine(0.3g,TID) orally for 12 weeks. At baseline and at the end of the 12th week,we measured the clinical parameters: Waist Circumference,Hip Circumference,Weight and Height, and computed body mass index (BMI) and waist-to-hip ratio(WHR).At the two points,we also assayed the laboratory parameters:TC,LDL-C,HDL-C,TG,adiponectin,Hba1c,glucose and insulin(Fasting and OGTT 2 hours),and computed HOMA-IR to reflect insulin resistance. Results:After 12 weeks of treatment, the levels of FPG(P=0.041) and HbA1C(P=0.017),TC, LDL-C,berberine group were decreased obviously, whereas control group. There was no difference in the levels of P2PG,HDL-C,TG between two groups.Although Waist Circumference,Hip Circumference,Body Weigh,BMI and WHR were decreased significantly in two groups between the start and the end of the treatment, there was no difference between the groups except Hip Circumference(P=0.045).In berberine group, insulin resistance was improved remarkblely, but the level of fasting insulin and OGTT 2 hours insulin were not changed. The levels of serum adiponectin were increased in two groups, and berberine guoup got much more improvement than control group(P=0.011).Conclusions:Berberine is a novelty drug that can improve glucose metabolism, lipid metabolism, insulin resistance.Berberine can increase the levels of serum adiponectin in type 2 diabetes mellitus patients. |
