BackgroundMotor Neuron Disease is a relentlessly progressive and fatal neurodegenerative disease that targets motor neurons in the spinal cord, cortex and the brain stem. The etiology and mechanisms of it remains unclear. There is no effective treatment in western medicine.Respiratory involvement is common symptoms, and it aggravates as the disease progressed, and most commonly died of respiratory failure.Measuring pulmonary function is helpful to find out early respiratory involvement and guiding clinical treatment. However, clinical trial is insufficient and systematic conclusion is lacking so far.Traditional Chinese Medicine has obtained some effects in treating MND,but it has not established a standardization of TCM syndrome differentiation and is lacks of objective basis.PurposeTo explore the pulmonary function changes in MND patients and its relationship with Traditional Chinese Medicine syndrome.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed 37 MND patients that fit the request. Gathered the patients' pulmonary function data,as well as their general data(such as sex, age, height weight…etc),course of illness, the Norris scale,ALSFRS scale,Appel scale scores when they came. After the datawere collected, use SPSS11.5 to record the data and analyze it.ResultIn this research,37 cases were collected.Comparing to the normal range, there were significant differences of VT.BF VT.BF.RV.FRC. TLC.RV/TLC.RV%TLC.MV.MVV.FEV 1%.FEV 1*30.PE MAX.p0.1 MAX (P<0.05);Classification of pnumonary dysfunction, the type of normal, restrictive, obstructive, mixed are 14(38%),1(3%),20(54%),2(5 %)respectively.Grade of pnumonary dysfunction in general, normal in 14 case(37.8%),gently drop in 6 cases(16.2%),markedly drop in 11cases (29.7%),severely drop in 6 cases(16.2%),no respiratory failure,ln restrictive type, slightly drop in 8 cases(40.0%),moderately drop in 8 cases(40%),severely drop in 6 cases(16.2%);In obstructive type, only 1 slightly drop case. There were no significant difference except p0.1(P<0.05)between the ALS group and SMA group. There were no significant difference except BF.PIMAX.p0.1MAX(P<0.05)among the TCM syndrome groups.ConclusionComparing to the normal range, the pulmonary function of MND patients were remarkably impaired, mainly showed restrictive ventilitory disorder, graded normal to markedly drop. There was no significant difference among ALS group and SMA group. There was also no significant difference among TCM syndrome groups,no significant relation was found between pulmonary function and TCM syndrome. But it also has its own shortcoming,it need us make further study on it and as a result improve it.
