[Objective]Observed the efficacy of the Foot-bathing Therapy with TCM on mild to moderate essential hypertension inpatients and outpatients in the Cardiovascular Medical Department of First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine, and provide evidence for integrated traditional Chinese and western medicine therapy in treating this disease.[Method]The study is the prospective controlled clinical trial. Collected the inpatients and outpatients in Cardiovascular Medical Department of First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine Who admitted to the mild to moderate essential hypertension disease during the period of Oct. of 2007 to Apr. of 2008. Analyzed the establishment of the control group (treated with western medicine alone) and the treatment group (treated with combination therapy). Observed the curative effect of this two therapies on the mild to moderate essential hypertension disease patients.[Results]Collected 50 cases of mild to moderate essential hypertension disease patients, aged from 38 to 65 years old, the mean age of which was 51 years old, 23 of which were male, and 27 of which were female. The length of duration of disease was 1 to 25 years (mean, 6 years). 20 of these 50 cases were I hypertension, and 30 of which were II hypertension, 5 of which combing with Coronary Heart Disease, 8 of which combing with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus, 24 of which combing with lipid abnormality. The TCM dialectical types of 50 patients with mild to moderate essential hypertension were distributed as follow: 15 cases with florid anger, 13 with weak yinand strong yang, 13 with wet sputum and florid emphraxis and 9 with weakness both on yinand yang. The Antihypertensive Effect is summarized as followings: 14 cases had marked effect, 28 were effective, 8 no effect, the total curitive rate was 84.0%. The effect of improving symptom is summarized as followings: 23 cases had marked effect, 19 were effective, 8 no effect, the total curitive rate was 84. 0%. The improvement of sleep quality of patients is specially obvious.[Conclusion]The main pathogenic factors and pathogenesis of EH are deficiency of the liver and kidney rise of wind-fire and obstruction of the channels by phlegm-stasis. External treatment with TCM have characteristics as follows: convenient, competitive price, diagnosis and prescription combined with local medication, internal treatment combined with external treatment, etc. This research shows that the Foot-bathing Therapy with TCM on mild to moderate essential hypertension has exact curative effect, is better than pure western medicine treatment. In the aspect of improving symptoms (such as vexation, impetuosity, etc) and the quality of sleep, this therapy shows original result. As an effective hypurgia for the treatment of EH, while standardizing the common cardiovascular diseases as EH, CHD, stroke, Foot-bathing Therapy should be combined with western medicine therapy actively to improve symptoms and the life quality to attain the expected purpose of integrating traditional Chinese and western medicine therapy.
