Objiectives: To observe the changes of large artery elasticity and the serum level of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) in elderly hypertensive patients, and analysis the relationship between hsCRP and lage artery elasticity. To evaluate the effects of lacidipine on large artery elasticity and the serum level of hsCRP in elderly hypertensive patients.Methods: 30 patients,mean age(65.97±4. 90)years old, with mild to moderate essential hypertension were enrolled as essential hypertension group(EH group), 20 healthy persons acted as control group. The patients in EH group were given lacidipine to control blood pressure within 12 weeks. Blood pressure, large artery elasticity and the serum level of hsCRP were examined in the health persons and the patients before and after the treatment.Carotid-femoral pulse wave velocity(cfPWV) was measured by using PP-1000 automated PWV analyzer. The serum level of hsCRP was measured with ELISA.Results: (1) CfPWV,pulse pressure(PP),pulse pressure index(PPI) and the serum level of hsCRP of EH group before treatment were significantly higher than those in control group(P<0.05). (2) After treatment with lacidipine, PP,PPI,cfPWV and the serum level of hsCRP were significantly decreased (79.33±14.67mmHg vs 61.33±10.23mmHg; 0.51±0.07 vs 0.45±0.06; 10.18±0.72m/s vs 9.36±0.67m/s; 7.82±0.49 mg/l vs 7.16±0.71 mg/l, all P<0.001) in elderly hypertensive patients. (3) The serum level of hsCRP was correlated positively with cfPWV,PP and PPI (r=0.440; 0.500; 0.443, all p<0.05).Conclusions: (1)The large artery elasticity was reduced significantly in elderly hypertensive patients. (2)HsCRP may be involved in the mechanism for the decreased of large artery elasticity. (3)Lacidipine could decrease the serum level of hsCRP and improve the large artery elasticity in elderly hypertensive patients.
