Objective To investigate the clinical effects of enteral, parenteral and enteral combinding with parenteral nutrition treatment on critically ill patients in ICU. Methods Forty-five patients were randomly divided into group A(PN), group B(EN)and group C(PN+EN) with 15 cases for each. The level body mass index (BMI), serum albumin, total protein, hemoglobin, total lymphocyte count(TLC), immunoglobulin A (IgA), G(IgG), M(IgM), the percentage of T lymphcyete subsets (CD3, CD4, CD8) and the ratio of CD4 and CD8 were detetmined on day 1 and day 8 after treatment. Then clinical conditions and immune function were analyzed. Results 42 patients (93.3%) restored to health and 3 patients (6.7%) died from original disease. The nutritional state and immune function were improved in these three groups with different levels. Conclusions PN, EN and PN+EN can improve the nutritional state and immune function of critically ill patients. EN and PN+EN are better than PN. Enteral nutritional support might not only ameliorate nutritional state but also improve immune function of critically ill patients. In critically ill patients, nutrition support should be selected. If the patients can not ingest nutrition from gastrointestinal tract, PN is the best choice. If state of an illness permits, critically ill patients should accept enteral nutrition.
