Objective To investigate the self-care abilities of the paraplegia patients after SCI(spinal cord injury) and explore the factors influencing the self-care abilities and qualities of life of the paraplegia patients after SCI. To work out the nursing measures and nursing compensation programs according to those influential factors.Methods By quantitative study (to design the investigation questionnaire) and qualitative investigation (observation and interview face to face). Evaluating the physical condition and quality of life of the paraplegia patients after SCI, the factors influencing the self-care abilities of paraplegia patients after SCI. And to analyze and summarize the existing nursing care methods in China by the literature analysis method.Results When the SCI patients are injured, their self-care abilities would overly decrease. Majority do their basic living activities under their family members, help, for example, cleaning, eating and going to the toilet. The self-care abilities of paraplegia patients after SCI are influenced by injury S-T segment S-T, family conditions, therapy condition, family support, social support and other factors. The existing nursing methods could satisfy the needs of the patients, but frequently be intercepted when the patients go out of the hospital. The therapy out of the hospital could not systematically be on. Through the observation and interview can get six subjects, including: the change of appearance and ability, the change of the affection, the change of self-activity, the belief of self-care, the change of the structure and devision of family labor and to worry about the future life.Conclusion Based on the superior results, the clinical nurses should assess the patients all round before the therapy in the hospital ends to understand the nursing problems and to do some predictions and interventions. We should pay attention to the education of the patients and their direct watchers. The final purpose is to enhance the patients, independence, to satisfy the basic living requirements and to decrease the incidence of the complications.
