As a common and frequently-occuring disease in oral cavity, periodontal disease is the main reason of tooth loss in adults. Modernmedicine believes that, on the one hand, the invasion from specificbacteria found in plaque and their production to host are the initialfactors of periodontal disease; on the other hand, the occurrence anddevelopment of periodontal disease are impacted and accommodated bythe general factors, such as heredity, immunity, systemic diseases, andendocrine networks. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that, the doctrine that "kidney deficiency and hyperfire is intrinsic factor, andhumid heat is extrinsic factor" is the etiological factor of periodontaldisease. "BUSHENGUCHIWAN" is a kind of recipe to treatperiodontitis specially, advanced by Professor Ju-zhi ZHANG in 1980s,on the base of "LIUWEIDIHUANGWAN". It has been included bypharmacopeia of the PRC (the People's Republic of China) since 1990and been recorded as a kind of protection spieces of TCM. With thehistory of about 20year clinical application, it is essential to investigatethe curative effects and security on BUSHENGUCHIWAN thoroughly, objectively, and scientifically, then to promote the TCM modernization. Objective: In view of above, the aim of this study is to select thepatients with moderate or severe periodontitis (diagnosed as "Kidneydeficiency and hyperfire" by TCM) and to reevaluate the curative effectsand security on "BUSHENGUCHIWAN" recipe. Methods: A randomized, blind, parallel-controlled project isadopted in this study. 88 patients with "Kidney deficiency andhyperfire" periodontitis, after baseline information collection and SRP(scaling and root planning), were divided into two groups: the test-onewere given "BUSHENGUCHIWAN" treatment, while the control-onewere "ZHIBAIDIHUANGWAN" (as the positive-control). Threemonths later, the difference of curative effects between these twogroups were evaluated by investigating clinical indexes of periodontitis(GI,SBI,TM,PPD,CAL), the symptoms of TCM and the density ofalveolar bone, and the difference of security between them wasestimated through comparing blood rutine, urine rutine, hepaticfunction, kidney function,blood-fasting sugar and the incidence ofadverse effects. Results: There was no statistical significance (P>0.05) on thedifference of baseline information between test and control groups, which showed that there was comparability between them. Aftertreatment, there was great improvement on clinical indexes ofperiodontitis and the symptoms of TCM in both groups, but thedifference between them about was no statistical significance (P>0.05). Imageology data showed that both treatments could increase the denseof alveolar bone (P<0.05), but no statistical significance between themon the density of alveolar bone before and after treatment exsisted. Sodid they about the security. Conclusions: "BUSHENGUCHIWAN", with excellent security, can improve clinical indexes of periodontitis, the symptoms of TCM,and the density of alveolar bone. So, it is a kind of Chinese patentmedicine treating periodontitis adjectively, on the base of SRP.
