| Jealousy is a kind of universal and complex passive emotion in humansociety. Jealousy is destructive and damaged if it is not adjusted and mediated properly.In real life, there are too many malignant events caused by jealousy, while there are fewresearch papers about jealousy in China, many researches still remain in thephenomenological and commentary description period. It causes too muchinconvenience in jealous consultation and treatment.Object: the research will investigate the present situation of jealousy ofundergraduate and graduate students, in order to offer the theoretical and scientific basisfor mental health education in university, the study will also explore the influences ofjealousy and its impacting factors on mental health.Method: we used questionnaires to do the research, they are the BringleJealousy Scale, the White Jealousy Scale, the Trust Scale, the Self-Esteem Scale,SES, the Social Support Evaluation Scale, the Simple Coping Style Scale, EysenckPersonality Questionaire (EPQ-RSC), the Symptom Checklist 90 (SCL-90)Participants: the research investigated 731 undergraduate and graduate students inpublic university in Shaanxi, they are 354 male, 377 female, aged from 17-38(M=21.25,SD=2.608)Results: 1. Based on the data analysis, we got the following results, femaleparticipants experience high jealousy than male participants on Bringle Jealousy Scale.2. There are negative correlations between interpersonal trust, extraversion, self-esteem,social support, positive coping style, lie and jealousy; There are positive correlationsbetween passive coping style, psychoticism, neuroticism and jealousy. 3. We analyse thestructural model of the relationship of jealousy, its influence factors and mental health,the results express that the model coincides the data well.Conclusions: 1. Among participants, about demographical variables, there are nosignificant differences on jealousy for educational degree, marry status, nationality,place of family, family economical status, parent condition, childhood foster; The onewho is the only child in the family have much less jealousy than the one who have brothers or sisters; the students who majored in social and art science have much morejealousy than the students who majored in natural and engineering science; There are nosignificant differences on jealousy for gender on The White Jealousy Scale, while,female expressed more jealousy than male students on the Bringle Jealousy Scale. 2.There are some correlations between jealousy and personality, possibly, the individualwho is extrovert and has high social simplicity has less experience of jealousy; theneuroticism is easy to obsess jealousy; there are still no clear relations betweenpsychoticism and jealousy. Psychoticism has remarkable positive correlations withWhite Jealousy Scale, while, it has some positive but not remarkable correlations withBringle Jealousy Scale. That is, the one who is psychoticism is easy to fall into theinterpersonal relationship jealousy 3. There are correlations between jealousy andself-esteem. Individual who owns high level of self-esteem disturbs less jealousy. 4.There are correlations between jealousy and interpersonal trust. The one who feelsthat the partner is predictable, can be dependent, faithful has less experience of jealousy.5. There are correlations between jealousy and social support, but they have no cleatconsistent relations. There are significant negative correlations between sum socialsupports, subjective and objective supports and White Jealousy. There are negative butno significant relations between social supports and Bringle Jealousy. The one whoobtains higher social support experiences less interpersonal jealousy. 6. There arecorrelations between jealousy and coping style, especially with passive coping style.The one who adopts passive coping style may be easy to obsess jealousy. Positivecoping style has close relationship with White Jealousy but no significant corralationwith Bringle Jealousy. Positive coping style can alleviate jealous harassment onWhite Jealousy. 7. Personality, interpersonal trust, self-esteem, social support andcoping style have direct or indirect effects to jealousy, the jealous condition ofparticipants can be predicted from these factors. 8. There are associations betweenjealousy, personality, interpersonal trust, self-esteem, social support, coping style andmental health. The one who have less jealousy, extraversion, adopt positive copingstyle have good mental health, the one who possess high level of interpersonal trust,self-esteem, social support, social simplicity own well mental condition; While the onewho have high level of jealousy, own high level of psychoticism and neuroticism,often adopt passive coping style possess bad mental condition. 9. Jealousy, personality,interpersonal trust, self-esteem, social support and coping style have direct or indirect effects to mental health. The conditions of mental health of participants can be predictedfrom these factors. The individual who possesses high jealousy can have many mentalproblems and disorders.Innovations: 1. Jealousy researches are still scarce, there are fewer research on theassociations between jealousy and mental health, so the research can accumulatereliable materials on studying jealousy in future. 2. We analyse the direct or indirecteffects of jealousy and its influence factors, such as personality, to mental health. 3. Theresearch detects that personality, self-esteem, social support and so on, have significanteffects to jealousy, jealousy and its influence factors have close associations with mentalhealth, the detection of this study offers scientific basis for alleviating and treatingjealousy, improving the conditions of participants' mental health, decreasing thefrequency of malignant events caused by jealousy, and putting forward interveningstrategies for mental health education. |
