Objective: To investigate the social support and the life quality ofthe severe burned patients when they were discharged from the hospitaland collect the information about the situation of social support and thelevel of their life quality. To analyze the correlations between socialsupport and life quality and identify the factors influenced them.Method: Random sampling was used to investigate 100 severe adultburn patients(>16years)who returned to the Department of Burns&Plastic surgery of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University during theperiod from February 2006 to February 2007.Personal generalinformation was collected and the following scales were applied whichincluded Social Support Rating Scale(SSRS) by Shuiyuan Xiao andGeneral Quality of Life Inventory by Lingjiang Li and Desen Yang. Weutilized EPIDATA to establish databases, and entered data by two workersand analyzed after being arranged and checked. Data was analyzed bystatistic description and statistic inference, including descriptive statistics,chi-square test, t-test, ANOVA, multiple linear regression, and linercorrelation. Results: (1) The total score of social support of severe burnedpatients was 40.97±7.59 in this research and it had significant differencecompared to the normal(45.16±5.80).No significant difference was foundin the aspects included different burn causes(such as thermal resources, whether the patient was injured when on duty so that the hospital bill andrelated compensation were paid by the employer), duration post burnt andwhether returned to work or study. There were significant difference insocial support scores among different genders, different occupationbefore the trauma, educational background and marital status. Malepatients had higher scores than female patients, but the latter group coulduse the social support more effectively than the former group. Among thegroup with higher education level who held associated degree or above, higher score of objective support was achieved than that in lowereducation level group who only received Junior or Senior high schooleducation. The married patients obtained evidently higher score than the unmarried cases.Supervisors got higher score of objective support thanother occupations.(2)The total score of the life quality of the severe burned patients was40.97±7.59 in this research .It had significant difference compared to thenormal(58.73±9.69).There was no significant difference in the total lifequality scores among patients with different genders, age, education, fullskin thickness of TBSA, different burn causes, length of hospitalizationand percentage of self-paid health care cost. This investigation indicatedthat the score of life quality had positive correlation with social support, duration post burnt, whether returned to work or study after the injury andthe pre-injury occupation, and negative correlation with deep partial skinthickness (or above) of TBSA.(3)Average score of the severe burned sufferer's desire forrecovering their appearance and working abilities was 3.91±0.98. Nosignificant difference was found among the patients with differentgenders, education levels and marital status responded to the aboveexpectations. The desire score in 16~25-year-old age group was higherthan any other age group.Conclusion:(1)The total score of social support of severe burned patients inrehabilitation duration was lower than the nomal, the level of the lifequality of the severe burned patients was low.(2) The married patients obtained higher score of social support andlife quality than the unmarried cases, the group with higher educationlevel who held associated degree or above got higher score of objectivesupport than that in lower education level group.Supervisors got higherscore of objective support than other occupations. Male patients hadhigher scores than female patients, but the latter group could use thesocial support more effectively than the former group.(3) Factors such as the social support, duration post burnt, whetherreturned to work or study and occupation before the trauma had positivecorrelation with the life quality of the severe burned patients. Deep partialskin thickness of TBSA had negative correlation with the life quality ofthe severe burns. (4) Patients in the age of 16~25 years had stronger desire to recovertheir limb functions, preserve working abilities and appearance.
