Purpose: Test the character of contrast sensitivity (CS) in normalsubjects and observe contrast sensitivity function recovery inpost-operative senile cataract patients and to discuss the influencingfactors of recovering visual quality. Methods: By using Vision Monitor visual evoked response imagingsystem, under bright environment and dark environment, the contrastsensitivity was recorded on:1.40 normal subjects (80 eyes). The subjectswere divided into 2 groups-by age: A group (16~49 years old) 56 eyes, Bgroup (50~65 years old) 24 eyes. 2. 50 age-related cataract cases (55eyes). The subjects were divided into 3 groups: C group were operatedwith Phaco+Sensar AR40e (17 eyes), D group were operated withPhaco+Bausch&Lomb LI61SE(18 eyes), E group were operated withPhaco+Array SA40N(20 eyes) lens implantation. The optical materialsof Sensar AR40e intraocular lens was hydrophobic acrylic, these of theother 2 types of intraocular lens were silicone intraocular. The patientswere examined for their contrast sensitivity under the best-correctedvisual acuity in dark and bright conditions.Results1. The contrast sensitivity function in normal subjects liked anupside down U-shaped graph. In 0.8cpd, 1.5cpd, 3cpd, 6cpd, 12cpd and20cpd spatial frequencies, the CS of A group under dark environment respectively was 18.7±0.5, 22.5±0.6, 26.0±0.9, 24.0±1.7, 19.1±3.2 and12.7±4.1; the CS of A group under bright environment respectively was18.7±0.5, 22.5±0.6, 26.0±1.0, 24.0±1.8, 19.9±2.4 and 13.7±3.6; the CS ofA group under dark environment respectively was 17.9±0.9, 21.7±1.0,24.8±1.5, 22.0±2.1, 15.9±3.6 and 9.7±4.7; the CS of A group under darkenvironment respectively was 17.8±1.3, 21.6±1.2, 24.3±1.9, 21.6±1.9,16.4±3.2 and 9.3±3.8. The B group was lower than the other group in allspatial frequencies under bright environment and dark environment.2. The best corrected postoperative visual acuity: C group, D groupand E group respectively were 1.0±0.2, 1.0±0.1, 1.0±0.1.3. Dark and clearly regards, the CS of C group was lower than Bgroup in any other spatial frequencies excluding 0.8cpd and 1.5cpd. Indark and bright conditions, the CS of D group was lower than B group inany other spatial frequency excluding 0.8cpd. In dark condition, the CS ofE group was lower than B group in all spatial frequencies. In brightcondition, the CS of E group was lower than B group in any other spatialfrequencies excluding 0.8cpd.4. Multifocal intraocular lens compared with monofocal intraocularlens: In dark and bright conditions, the CS of E group was lower than theother two intraocular lens groups in 12cpd and 20cpd.5. Intraocular lens compared with the normal control group:Comparison of different optical materials intraocular lens: There were nosignificant differences in all spatial frequencies between the CS of Cgroup and D group. Conclusions1. The contrast sensitivity function in normal subjects liked anupside down U-shaped graph. The B group was lower than the A group inall spatial frequencies under bright environment and dark environment.2. The CS of intraocular lens was significantly lower than that of theaged matching normal control group; the CS of the multifocal intraocularlens was significantly lower than that of the monofocal intraocular lens inthe high frequency; there Were no significant differences in between theCS of hydrophobic acrylic lens and silicone intraocular lens. |
