OBJECTIVES: The objective of this review was to determine the paediatric strabismus distribution and general tendency of which in China, and fuco on intervention criteria and treatment of strabismus. METHODS: The medical records of inpatients who were operated on in Eye Center of Affiliated 2nd Hospital of Zhejiang University college of medicine from January 2002 to December 2006 by various surgeons were reviewed to determine the types and surgical ages of childhood strabismus. RESULTS: Strabotomy was performed on 489 children under general anesthesia, aging from 6 month to 13 years. The percentages of strabismus diagnosed were as follows : comitant esotropia,48.5% ; comitant exotropia,31.9% ; paralytic, 9.6%; specific types, 10%.The proportion of partially accommodative among conmitant esotropia increased during this period, while which of constant among conmitant exotropia decreased comparing to intermittent exotropia. The distribution of surgcal ages was as follows: the most in esotropia was aging from 3 to 6(excluding 6),46.4%; the most in exotropia was upwards of 8 years ago,45.5%. CONCLUSIONS: Esotrops underwent operationswere more than exotrops among children, which declared that the proportion of surgical exotrops was higher . The proportion of partially accommodative esotropia was increased, attributing to early eye examination and continual visual function training. The most of exotrops was upwards of 8 years ago,and the proportion of intermittent exotropia was increased, which indicated the intervention criteria of intermittent exotropia was not consummate enough despite the progression.
