By means of bioactivity-guiding, the chemical constituents and bioactivities of Adina pilulifera were discussed in the present study. The 95% ethanol extract and its different frations from the whole plant of Adina pilulifera were screend for their antiviral in vitro, anticancer and antibacterial activities by cytopathic effect reduction assay, MTT assay and microdilution method , respectively. The results indicated that the ethyl acetate fraction exhibited anticancer activity against 5 tumour cell lines tested in the present study, especially against the Hep-2 and LOVO cells with IC50 values of 7.8μg/ml. Besides, the fration also showed moderate antibacterial activity against 7 bacterias strains. Minimal inhibitory concentration(MIC) were ranging from 1.25~2.5mg/ml.Ten compounds were isolated from the ethyl acetate fration. Their chemical structures were characterizd on the basis of spectral and chemical evidences to be: Sarracenin (1), 2-methyl-5-hydroxy-7-O-ethyl caffeate chromome (2), Naringenin(3), 2-methyl-5, 7-dihydroxychromome (4) , 2-methyl-6-hydroxyl-cinnamic acid methyl ester (5) , eriodictyol (6) , quercetin (7) , Naringenin-7-O-β-D-glucoside( 8 ) , eriodictyol-7-O-α-D-glucoside (9), quercetin-3-O-β-D-glucoside(10). In addition, one compound was abtained from the n-butanol frationk, which was finally identified as Morrosiside(11) by spectral and chemical evidences. Except for compound 4, the others were abtaind from this plant for the first time; Compounds 1, 2,3, 5, 6,8, 9 and 11 were found for the first time from this genus Adina. Compound 2 and 5 were new compounds. Some of the isolated compounds were tested for their antiviral in vitro, anticancer and antibacterial activities by the methods mentioned above. As a result, compound 6 (eriodictyol) was found to be active against Cox B3 and HSV-1, with IC50 values of 15.7μg/ml and 15.7μg/ml and SI values of 16 and 32,...
