BACKGROUNDStapedectomy has traditionally been used in treatment of otosclerosis. Total stapedectomy is considered by many otologists to be much more easily causing sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) than small fenestra stapedotomy, but there is no perfect experimental study about animals now. The guinea pig temporal bone and its contents are similar to those of the human, but there are some exceptions that become important for experimental studies: 1) There are two ossicles which are much more tiny than human's: the malleoincudal complex and the stapes with a thinner footplate which can be easily crashed by operation. 2) There are much more small spaces between the stapes and the structures especially facial nerve and the lateral semicircular canal around it. As a result, the choice of methods about anesthesia, operation, and hearing examnation must be considered firstly to replicate an ideal animal's model of stapedectomy for the experimental study which aims to find the effect of hearing level after the operation. Being a useful model for otologic research, the guinea pig is predispose to anesthetic death and complications such as infection and perilymph fistulation because of low immune defensive ability and cooperative ability. And the experimental study is difficult to be finished consequently. So, besides of finding a better method of operation and the ways dealing with the complications, we must detective an optimal anaesthetic with a reasonable amount of dosage and concentration.
