Objectives: to know the characteristic and driver's detail of fatal traffic accidents of ChongQing freeway, the epidemiologic data of fatal traffic accidents on ChongQing freeway from 1996 to 2005 were collected ,analyzed .Methods: These retrospective data were gathered from Forensic Medicine Agency of ChongQing(1996-2005), traffic accidents section of ChongQing highway administration, ChongQing vehicles administration agency.Results: (1)A total of 735 people lost their lives in motor vehicle crashes in ChongQing highway from 1996 to 2005 ,persons killed in 2005 were 13.5 times as many as those in 1996; fatal crashes were 525, accounted for 13% in all crashes with the comparison of injury crashes by 41%; fatal crashes increased dramatically 1200% from 1996 to 2005; fatal crashes and persons killed or injured per 100KM on freeway increased 100%,50% from 1996 to 2005,respectively; (2)19:00 to 24:00 in a day , Monday and Sunday in a week, January and November in a year were proved to be the deadliest periods; (3)The majority of persons killed or injured in fatal traffic crashes were pedestrians(29.7%),followed by front-seat passengers (28.8%) , drivers( 21.1%), ,back-seat passengers ( 17.8%),unknown(2.6%); (4)The principal responsibility accounting for fatal traffic accidents was undertaken by drivers(41.4%), followed by pedestrians(40.7%); (5) Persons 25 to 34 years had the most persons...
