Objective: Based on TCM literatures ,the experiences of YU Jia-yan in treating cough were systematically summed up .This essay aimed to perfect the understanding of cough in theory and offer theoretical evidence in practice and new remedy.Methods: According to the TCM principles of studying academic thought from medical origin, some methods of studying traditional documents and other subjects were employed to study The Medical Codex to grasp the basic academic thoughts of YU Jia-yan, especially to absorb summarize his academic thoughts of curing cough.Results: YU paid great attention to the internal causes of cough, i.e. the constitution states of the patients rather than the external causes. According to the theory of"the internal and external influencing each other"in Huangdi′s Canon of Medicine, he thought the root cause of cough lay in the internal, therefore the treatment should be pay attention to constitution. In the process of probing the causes of cough, YU lay great emphasis on analogy. Referring to the theory"feeling cold and drinking coldly may harm your lung"made by Huangdi′s Canon of Medicine, and the theory of treating cough in summaries of Synopsis of the Golden Chamber, YU discussed the pathogenesis of external cough by using analogic methods. As to the application of drugs, YU knew that the spleen and stomach played an important role in five internal organs, so the drastic drugs should not be used, instead the drugs with mild action were be choosed. The dosage should be less also, for the focus of cough lay in lung, which is a delicate organ belonging to Shangjiao.Conclusion :The experiences of YU Jia-yan in treating cough were:paying attention to constitution ,using analogic methods to discuss the pathogenisis of cough ,thinking highly of spleen and stomach in treatment ,and using mild action drugs to protect lung.
