Objective To detect effects of DNA damages and genotoxicity in rats after postnatal exposure to 1 800 MHz electromagnetic irradiation. Methods 72 Wistar rats(36 in each gender), 4 week-old, 60~85g body weight, were randomly divided into four groups which included 2 experiments and 2 controls. The experimental subjects were irradiated in the 1 800 MHz-RF(CW) electromagnetic fields for 21days(12 hours/day), their power density were 0.5 mW/m~2 (group Ⅰ)and 1.0 mW /m~2 (group Ⅱ). Meanwhile, sham-controls were carried out respectively. The sperm abnormality, micronucleus(MN) formation in marrow polychromatic erythrocytes(PCE), DNA break of peripheral blood cells(PBC) and hippocampus were examined. Results There was no significant difference in the rate of sperm abnormality between the experimental groups and the control. The tailing areas of PBC in experiments were higher than those in the control (P <0.05); The tailing areas of hippocampus in group Ⅱ were higher than those in group I and the control (P <0.05), and those in group Ⅰ were higher than the control(P <0.05).Conclusion After postnatal exposure to 1 800 MHz electromagnetic irradiation, but some damages on DNA in PBC and hippocampus in rats were found.
