BackgroundGlobal TB epidemic continues to grow in recent years; the incidence rate of TB was growing at approximately 1.1 percent per year and the number of cases at 2.4 percent per year. China ranks second on the list of 22 high-burden countries, faced with a serious epidemic of tuberculosis. The prevalence rate of active TB patient and that of sputum smear positive patient were 367/100,000 and 122/100,000 respectively in China; there are over 5 million people with active TB, resulting in 130,000 deaths annually.Case detection and treatment success are two linchpins for TB control. WHO has set the targets of detecting 70 percent of all new smear-positive TB cases, and successfully treating 85 percent of these cases by 2005. Only the targets are met and kept in following years, can the incidence of TB be halted and begin to reverse and the prevalence and deaths rates be halved by 2015. However, WHO-reported treatment success rate has fluctuated around 80 percent in the past years without significant improvement, indicating that treatment success is still one of the unmet challenges in TB...
