AIM: To investigate the role of the three-dimensional modeland finite element analysis of scaphoid bone in the surgery ofscaphoid bone tumor.MESHODS: The study was conducted in Hand SurgeryDepartment, China-Japan Union Hospital, Jilin University from July2005 to August 2005. DICOM files of SCT were gathered in afemale with scaphoid bone tumor using 3D-Doctor 1.2 software, anda three-dimensional model of the scaphoid bone and its virtualostectomy model were constructed. The models were read to inputinto Ansys9.0 to construct finite element models to analyze theirbiomechanical characteristics.RESULTS: In the three dimensional model of the scaphoidbone, the precise location and surgical access of the tumor wasdetermined. The biomechanical characteristics of the bone weresignificantly changed,so a radial bone graft was transferred.CONCLUSION: The three dimensional model and finite elementanalysis plays an important role in the wrist operaions.
