| Objective: To detemin the expression of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and microvessel density (MVD) in sinonasal inverted papilloma(NIP) and to clarify the relationship between MVD and VEGF and the function in the pathophysiology of NIP.Methods: The VEGF and MVD expression was studied with immunohistochemical method in section from 34 NIP patients and 12 inferior turbinates tissues from patients with deviation of nasal septum. Results : The positive rates of VEGF were 82.35% and 16.67%, the positive cells counts were57.39 ± 4.54 and 19.82 ± 6.25 respectively in NIPs and inferior turbinates, the VEGF expression in NIPs was significantly stronger than that in inferior turbinates (P<0.01) . The MVD were 46.82 ± 3.71 and 23.52±2..41 in NIPs and inferior turbinates,a significant difference in CD34 expression (P<0.01). The mean MVD was significantly higher in NIPs with positive expression of VEGF than those with negative VEGF(P<0.05).The expression of MVD and VEGF was not related to the clinical staging.A significant positive correlation was found betweenMVD and VEGF(r=0.869).Conclusions: The expression of VEGF may contribute to the angiogenesis , as a result, to enhance the development of NIP. MVD can quantitivly reflect the condition of vessel growth in NIP. VEGF and MVD may have prognostic value in NIP. Controling the growth of vessels in NIP maybe a new way to treat it. |
