| Objective. This study was designed to evaluate the effects of Haloperidol on the intelligence factors of children with Tourette syndrome(TS) and its influence on the secretion of prolactin and thyroid -stimulating hormone. Methods: From Febrary 2002 to August 2003,120children aged 7-13 with TS received intelligence tests and were retested by means of Wechster Intelligence Scale for Children -Chinese Revised(1985) (WISC-CR)after 3 months treatment with Haloperidol. The results of verbal IQ (VIQ), performance IQ(PIQ) and full intelligence quotient(FIQ) were got according to the scores of the eleven subtests and the quotients of the three intelligence factors including verbal comprehension(VC) , perceptual organization(PO) and memory & concentration (M/C) were obtained.By RIA technique, the serum prolactin levels in 72 TS children were assessed respectively before and after the treatment with Haloperidol .Serum concentrations of TSH, as well asFT3, FT4 were assessed in 56 TS children ,who were divided radomly into two groups:the Haloperidol treated group (n=35)and untreated group(n=21).Results: 1. FIQ, VIQand PIQ are normal, showing no significant difference before and after the treatment with Haloperidol.(P>0.05).Whereas the digit span and coding subtests scores were significantly lower after using Haloperidol(P<0.01).Of the three intelligence factors,M/Cdecreased significantly.(P<0.05).2. The serum prolactin level in 72 children using Haloperidol for TS was significantly higher than that before the treatment(P<0.01).3. The mean of TSH in treated group(n=35) show no significant change in any value of thyroid hormones compared with the untreated group(n=21).(P>0.05).In the treated group, the mean of TSH was higer in younger than that in the older, the value of TSH and FT4 were higer for the children who were treated longer, while no significant difference was noted on age, sex and the duration of treatment. |
