OBJECTIVES The aims of the study are to describe the patients'experiences undergoing laparoscopic surgery, and to explore the effects of individual music on reducing the preoperative anxiety and of Music Relaxation and Imagery Training on surgical stress and postoperative outcomes of laparoscopic hepatectomy.METHODS The data of the first part was collected by depth interviewingwith 6 participants undergoing laparoscopic cholecystectomy and analyzed by the method of Colaizzi analysis. The second part was an experimental pilot study, in which 107 patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery under general anesthesia were investigated and allocated randomly to two groups: the music group (n=56) listened to a 30 min individual music session by earphone l~2h preoperatively, and the control group (n=51) listened no sound by earphone. Anxiety, blood pressure, heart rate, galvanic skin response and saliva cortisol were poly-measured before, during and after intervention. The third part was to assigned 40 patients with laparoscopic heaptectomy to the test group and the control group. Music relaxation and imagery training were taught preoperatively and tested postoperatively in the test group. Serum cortisol, C-reactive-protein, immunoglobulin and blood pressure were compared between two groups. Pain, bowel function, mobilization and duration of hospital stays were also studied as outcome variables.RESULTS1. A complex mesh of feelings and interrelated experiences were expressed, faith and worriment, satisfaction of surgery, pain, self-care and need of aids.2. Many patients (n=86, 80.37%) had habit of listening to music, and 53 (49.53%)patients listened once every day at least. 54 (50.47%) and 42 (39.25%) patients liked soft music and pop music, and then classic music and national music.3. Individual music decreased anxiety significantly after music intervention compared with the control group and pre-intervention. The systolic pressure in the music group showed a downward trend and it was lower than pre-intervention. The galvanic skin response increased gradually in both groups, and it was much higher in the music group than in the control without statistic significance. The...
