| Abstract: We performed a prospective, randomized trial in 39 patients to see how colonoscopy preparation with Sodium Phosphate Oral Saline(Fleet Phospho-Soda) compared with conventional Magnesium Sulfate in terms of the ease of preparation, quality of colon cleansing and gastrointestinal intolerance. A nurse gave a questionnaire to the patient prior to colonoscopy, assessing how well the preparation was tolerated and about the presence of symptoms ( abdominal distention, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and so on) . Overall, patients found Sodium Phosphate Oral Saline andMagnesium Sulfate preparation were also easy to complete, while the former was better toleranced for needing less drinking. Colonoscopists, unaware of the type of agent used, graded the quality of colon cleansing and scored the degereee of segmental colonic cleansing. All patients were judged to have had an excellent preparation, the overall quality of bowel preparation with Sodium Phosphate Oral Saline was slightly better than with Magnesium Sulfate, however, the difference was not statistically different; while taking Sodium Phosphate Oral Saline before colonoscopy improved cleaning in colon segments except rectum. Serial measurements of vital signs changes and serum biochemical abnormalities, which were analyzed before and after the colonoscopy, did not reveal any clinicalluy significant changes. Hyperphosphatemia was noted with Sodium Phosphate Oral Saline, but was transient, and not causing any clinical signs or symptoms. Nausea and abdominal distention were more common with Magnesium Sulfate, but there were no difference in statistics. We conclude that, in the group of patients studied, Sodium Phosphate Oral Saline and Magnesium Sulfate are equally well toleranced and effective in preparation for colonoscopy, while the former may be superior in bowel cleansing. Though Sodium Phosphate Oral Saline mayalterat serum electrolure, but it causes almost no clinicalabnormality, and the disorder is transient. So Sodium PhosphateOral Saline is a well-toleranted, efficacious and safe oralagent for colonoscopy preparation , and will be gainingpopularity at the expense of Magnesium Sulfate. |
