Panax notoginseng (burk) is a kind of rare Chinese traditional herbal. It is sweet in taste, mildly bitter and warm in nature .It can arrest bleeding, remove blood stasis, and relieve pain. Panax notoginseng is mainly adopted for various kinds of internal injuries and traumas in traditional prescriptions, while it has been widely adopted for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases in recent years. Both of R1, which is the characteristic component, and Rd, whose content is large, are haplosaponins extracted from panax notoginseng. However, under the entry of "panax notoginseng" in The Pharmacopoeia of the People's Republic of China (2000 edition), the quality determination of R1 and Rd is not required. In accordance with the key project to promote the quality standard of panax notoginseng and the standardization of high-quality manufacture system of Chinese herbals, our study will assess the effects of R1 and Rd on microcirculation, blood rheology, anticoagulation, fibrinolysis in pharmacody-manic way, in order to prove they both are also available components of panax notoginseng. It will provide pharmacodymanic experiment evidences for putting R1 and Rd into the verification standard, as well as theory and experiment evidences for developing Panax notoginseng. We found that both R1 and Rd could obviously increase the caliber of normal mice's auricle arteriole, patent blood capillaries, and blood flow rate; could ease NA-induced convulsion of normal mice's auricle capillary and comparativelyincrease patent blood capillaries and blood flow rate; could obviously reduce the viscosity of whole blood, plasma, and fibrinogen; could moderately extend coagulation time and obviously raise the ratio of t-PA/PA-I in rats' plasma. All the results indicate that R1 and Rd could promote the microcirculation of normal mice and rats with microcirculation disturbance, improve blood rheological property of rats as models of blood stasis, resist coagulation mildly, and promote fibronolysis. We can determine that R1 and Rd could promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis and they are indeed available components of panax notoginseng. To put R1 and Rd into verification standard will help to promote quality of Chinese traditional herbals. The study also initially discusses the mechanism of how R1 and Rd promote blood circulation and remove blood stasis. We consider it mainly linked with anti-coagulation, promotion of fibronolysis and release of NO from synthesis of endothelial cells.
